Job Summary

Turaco is looking for a Finance Officer with top notch accounting and finance experience who can build, maintain, and scale transparent and accountable business systems so that Turaco can efficiently meet its business objectives. This role will work closely and report to the Country Director and Operations Manager in Uganda, and will have external communication with Turaco’s partner engagements in Uganda, demonstrating an awareness of the financial relationship with each partner. This role should have a deep understanding of tax and regulation in Uganda, an established relationship with URA, and an ability to manage day-to-day financial transactions of revenue and expense tracking for the company.

This person should be interested in working in the start-up/social impact space, ready to confront different challenges, ambiguity, and be a part of growing this young business.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

Accounting + finance

  • Manage expense including petty cash, wire transfers, payroll, expense classifications, claims payments and general AP.

  • Manage monthly PAYE withholdings, returns and payments.

  • Undertake monthly finance reconciliations.

  • Manage partner revenue calculations, generate invoices, manage AR, and VAT withholdings.

  • Maintain appropriate company documentation and compliance with regulatory and tax-related requirements.

  • Maintain accounting software system and initiate periodic improvements.

  • Liaise with external tax and audit firm for creation of annual trial balance, tax filings, and audits when necessary.

  • Alongside Country Director, consolidate financial statements, budget vs. actual reporting, and other reports as required, providing commentary and ensuring accurate and timely presentation to management.

Implementation of Financial Policy and Planning Processes

  • Alongside Country Director, help to prepare the annual budget plan for all aspects of Turaco’s operations so that it meets accounting compliance standards and the requirements of other key stakeholders.

  • Prepare accurate reports in line with Turaco’s reporting schedules.

  • Make recommendations to improve processes and minimize discrepancies.

  • Help to develop and implement policies, standards and procedures to meet legislative requirements, best practice approaches and to provide ethical guidance for the finance and accounting processes of Turaco.

  • Oversee all ledger and bank account reconciliations.

  • Oversee payroll process company-wide with keen understanding of income tax provisions in both Uganda and Kenya.

External Stakeholder Management

  • Develop and maintain relationships with key business partners (including banks, auditors, actuaries and regulatory bodies).

  • Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for annual audits.

  • Maintain and update records of invoices, revenue and costings (both expense tracking and project-level expense classification).

  • Stakeholder analysis of partner to partner expenses and profitable activities.

  • Acumen in accounting and financial issues and procedures; 2 - 4 years of experience in similar position

  • Proficient in English language – verbal and written communication and familiar with other regional languages.
