Position Summary

AFRIpads is looking for an experienced Head of Supply Chain & Logistics with expertise in global sourcing and supply chain management for manufacturing, preferably in Sub-Saharan Africa.  The position will oversee and manage all aspects of supply chain including global sourcing, procurement, purchasing, supplier management, transport and forwarding, customs brokerage, inventory management, fleet management and general operations. Particular emphasis will be on the global sourcing and supply chain component, with the three-prong aim of continuously sourcing global markets for lower cost inputs, optimizing ordering pipeline for in-time production to prevent stock outs, and managing key supplier relationships. This position is based in Kampala, Uganda and reports directly to the CEO, offering a unique leadership role in a socially-driven SME working at the front lines of manufacturing and distribution in emerging markets.

  • Show ability to coordinate all of the various team members, vendors, transporters, officials and others, from the global community to ensure efficiency in the department.

  • Show ability to organize the purchase, movement, and import of goods from China, India, Europe, United States, Dubai, East Africa and elsewhere to build an efficient, cost-effective, end-to-end global supply chain serving multiple countries.

  • Have strong project management experience to implement processes, tools and innovations across all markets in various countries.

  • Have strong leadership and communication skills and be capable of effectively training, inspiring, growing and advising a team.

  • Be proactive, researching and learning whatever is needed to tackle new challenges.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead Global Sourcing and Supply Chain Management

    • Source highest quality, lowest cost raw material inputs from global marketplace to ensure AFRIpads stays cost-competitive in the market.

    • Establish and manage global (multi-cultural) supplier relationships - ensuring consistent quality and lead-time delivery, ethical manufacturing practices, and transparency in supplier activities.

    • Collaborate with production and sales departments to order optimal quantities of raw materials.

    • Ensure best-practice negotiations for pricing and payment terms for all AFRIpads’ suppliers, maximizing end-to-end supply chain efficiency, eliminate waste from the value chain, and save costs.

  • Lead Logistics and Freight Forwarding Management

    • Oversee movement of goods pre-and post-production, ensuring compliance with government regulations on both import and export processes.

    • Ensure AFRIpads continues to be a reliable supplier to its thousands of customers, shipping products in a timely fashion to all corners of the globe.

    • Establish and create good working relationships with reputable, cost-competitive 3rd party freight forwarders to ensure movements of raw materials (imports) and finished products (exports) are consistent, reliable and on-time.

  • Lead Fleet Management

    • Ensure all vehicles are compliant with environmental and quality standards in Uganda and oversee proper, pro-active maintenance to keep AFRIpads’ team safe on the road.

  • Support R&D Department

    • Coordinate with ‘Product Design Department’ to continuously research and source new and improved raw materials to be used in AFRIpads’ current and future product line.

  • Manage Operations Team

    • Capacity building and strengthening systems in department.

    • Provide regular updates to CEO and Senior Management Team on progress and challenges of department.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • Strong for-profit business supply chain management experience, preferably for manufacturing industry.

  • Required, minimum 3-5 years of management-level experience and certifications in global sourcing and supply chain management, preferably in Africa.

  • Required, minimum 3-5 years of experience in operations, procurement, logistics, and inventory management.

  • Required, experience managing a multi-cultural team.

  • Advanced MS Excel and quantitative analysis skills.

  • Resilient and resourceful mindset, collaborative nature, entrepreneurial spirit.

  • A passion for social development and economic growth in Africa.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communications skills (English).

Additional Requirements

  • Flexibility with shifting priorities and competing demands in a fast-paced, challenging work environment.

  • Willingness to work flexible hours (including evenings and weekends) and to travel within and outside Africa (min. 40% of the time).

The compensation package is commensurate with experience.  A two-year contract upon signing, with opportunity for performance-based extension.
