About the Company
Kumwe Harvest is a social enterprise aggregating and processing maize in Rwanda. Founded to eliminate the presence of aflatoxin in Rwanda’s maize value chain, Kumwe Harvest has developed a novel approach to maize aggregation. We transform the post-harvest process into a quick and mechanised operation, enabled through efficient logistics, the purchase of unshelled maize (on the cob) and mechanised grain processing (shelling and drying). The 'just-in-time' process prevents the growth of aflatoxin, enabling farmers to sell to high-value commercial markets, reduce their post-harvest expenses and losses, and ultimately increase their incomes by more than 60%. With ambitious growth planned for the next three years, we are looking for a responsible and experienced Operations Manager to join our innovative, high-performing and multi-cultural team.
This is a new role, created in order to expand day-to-day operations. The Operations Manager will own Kumwe’s day-to-day operations and lead a small Operations Team.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
Oversee the planning and implementation of harvest seasons, including procurement, logistics, processing and delivery of maize;
Oversee all logistics and processing at Kumwe facilities;
Identify and procure processing machinery and other equipment and supplies;
Hire, train and manage the team necessary to carry out operations;
Support the creation of and management of operating budgets;
Work with the Finance Manager to ensure the prompt payment, filing and reconciliation of hired labour;
Provide daily reporting on performance and stocks;
Interface with other managers to identify problems or opportunities for growth;
Ensure company values are communicated and upheld on the ground.
Demonstrated experience designing, implementing and managing grain systems;
Experience overseeing, managing and reporting on large and complex projects;
Experience overseeing, managing and recording a large team of hired labour;
A strong understanding of maize value chains in Rwanda and East Africa;
Knowledge of aflatoxin and experience in aflatoxin prevention projects a bonus;
Experience of just-in-time logistics and processes;
Fluent written and spoken English. Kinyarwanda, Swahili, and French a strong bonus;
Attention to detail and highly organised;
Desire to take initiative and tackle challenges;
Comfortable with Office Suite or Google Docs, particularly Word/Docs and Excel/Sheets;
Bachelor’s degree and 4+ years’ experience in a relevant field are strongly desired.
Kumwe Harvest believes everyone should be committed to and share in the success of the company. Compensation will be determined based on candidate qualifications, including the potential for performance commissions.
