Job Summary

Bridges to Prosperity is seeking a motivated, dynamic and highly capable Assessments Engineer to support our Uganda Program. As the Uganda Assessments Engineer, you will be responsible for assessing potential bridges sites for social and technical feasibility. The Assessments Engineer will interface with local government and community leaders to identify and assess sites. This role will require the Assessments Engineer to be moving frequently amongst upcountry locations.

The ideal candidate should have an undergraduate degree or diploma in Civil Engineering with experience on civil works construction sites and experience using survey equipment such as a total station. The successful candidate will thrive in an independent and sometimes isolated work environment.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

  • Liaise with district, sub-county, and village leaders to identify and assess potential bridge sites.

  • Interview local leaders and community members as part of social site assessments.

  • Assess sites for technical feasibility and select optimal bridge centerline locations.

  • Perform topographical surveys using total stations and auto levels.

  • Perform geotechnical tests and assessments at prospective bridge sites.

  • Liaise with geotechnical laboratories for sample testing.

  • Manage and upload bridge survey information, transfer survey data into Excel and other programs as required.

  • Manage needs assessment data in Salesforce.

  • Work with VP of Monitoring & Evaluation and Uganda Program Manager to create a regional needs assessment plan.

  • Create progress reports for Uganda PM and other leadership.

  • Create regional reports for government partners.

  • Assist Program Coordinator with BOQ calculations.

  • Assist Project Engineer with preliminary bridge layouts.

  • Participate in capacity building activities for government partners as required.

  • Liaise with local government officials to gain information on regional risks and security issues.

  • Assess logistics for setting up operations in new locations, such as material and accommodation cost and availability.

  • Any other task as reasonably required to support the Uganda program.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Civil Engineering.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and AutoCAD.

  • Experience in surveying and use of an auto level and total station.

  • Experience on civil works construction sites.

  • Experience in geotechnical assessments.

  • Fluent written and spoken English (Luganda and other local languages a plus).

  • Experience working upcountry.

  • Driver’s license.

Working Conditions

The position requires extensive travel upcountry in remote areas, including living in modest accommodation.

Physical Requirements
